The expansion building of the University of Applied Sciences constitutes an opportunity to connect the Stuttgart University Campus to the surrounding areas of the city, Platz der Deutschen Einheit and “Stadtgarten”.
The project introduces two new volumes, a natural continuation of the existing buildings, a sequence of formally autonomous aligned volumes contrasting with the exuberant forms of the Liederhalle.
The two buildings, with the same volumetric proportions and material consistency, are aligned along Breitscheidstrasse. The first one is the same height as the existing blocks, while the second, the possible additional expansion, is taller and forms a relationship with the urban scene of Platz der Deutschen Einheit. Functions are organized around a large void that runs through the building; this grand space is characterized by stone ramps lighted by a continuous skylight, an excellent place for exhibitions of architecture and design, or alternatively can be set up as a place for students to meet informally. This void acts as an environmental device capable of creating natural cross ventilation. The core-to-core structural concept features white concrete walls with travertine details around the entrances.
